Thomas Martin (born 1963, Berlin) is a playwright, poet, publicist and director. Growing up in East Berlin, Martin worked as a stage technician. His literary productivity began with the publication of poetry, prose and essays in newspapers, magazines and anthologies. As an assistant director, dramaturg and author for the Deutsches Theater Berlin and the Berliner Ensemble, he worked with Heiner Müller and Frank Castorf. Since 2010 he has been chief dramaturg at the Volksbühne, Berlin. Frank Castorf staged his adaptation of Strindberg’s Black Flags (1997, Stockholm) and his theatre collage entitled Krähwinkelfreiheit, based on Johann Nestroy’s satirical comedy (1998, Burgtheater, Vienna). Since 2001 he has been closely associated the Lyon-based Compagnie Scènes, led by Philippe Vincent. In 2007, Vincent staged his adaptation of Oresteia, which was later performed in Corsica, Marseille, St Etienne ad Lyon.
