Aleksander Kawalec graduated from the University of Agriculture in Kraków and holds a PhD from the Agricultural University in Poznań, Poland. He worked at the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of the University of Warsaw for many years. An expert on combating hunger in West and Central Africa and in Haiti, he works for bilateral and international organisations. From the 1980s to 2009, he travelled many times to Haiti. Kawalec has a collection of Haitian painting. With Marian T. Kutiak he co-authored the album Malarstwo haitańskie w zbiorach polskich (Haitian Painting in Polish Collections) and the catalogue for the exhibition Haitian Painting, mounted at the Casimir Palace in 2004 by the University of Warsaw. He has organised many exhibitions of Haitian paintings from the collection of the Kawalec family.
